Working Together

For me, deciding which professional learning networks to join was difficult. There are so many networks out there and the more I investigate the more I find to be beneficial for me in my current job and in the future. I believe diving into a couple at a time helps from becoming overwhelmed with massive amounts of information. I chose Common Sense Media, Edutopia: Flipped Classroom, ISTE Connect: Online & Blended Learning Network, and Free Tech 4 Teachers.

As a member of these learning communities I find I can learn from others in the group and have a voice. A voice that can change the way things are now. I have been a member of ISTE Connect and Common Sense Media for almost five years now and I have learned so much through articles and professional developments. I can bounce ideas off others in and out of the same profession.

The wealth of information out there is incredible, and I want to consume and contribute to the knowledge. These networking tools are critical to my advancement of knowledge. I am rarely able to go to in person professional developments, having virtual meetings or watching recordings is a God send. I can be professionally developed and communicate with others in the field I work in. As a technology specialist I don't have a team at school to meet with and discuss and plan together. As a technology teacher I cannot constantly be recreating the wheel, there is not enough time. I rely on communication with others, sharing, begging, borrowing, and stealing thoughts, ideas, and projects.

My current status of collaboration is a low on the newer networks I have joined because I am still taking in the knowledge and getting used to everything that is available. Once I observe and look more through the networks, I will become more engaged and feel better about contributing and sharing my voice. I am a little shy at first, but my engagement and contribution will continue to grow.
